FAQs

CAN ANY INSTRUMENT USE THIS SYSTEM?
Yes! As the LSP in in ALL TWELVE KEYS and TREBLE and BASS CLEF it can accommodate ANY instrument.

WHY DO I NEED TO LEARN THE SEVEN MODES?
Most music is constructed from a tonal palette drawn from three main chord types.
These broad chord types are MAJOR, MINOR and DOMINANT.
The 7 note MAJOR SCALE, when harmonised by 'stacking'  it's scale degrees in 3rds, will produce 7 chords. This is one four note chord from each of the 7 scale degrees.
Example in C MAJOR:
Scale tones are: C-D-E-F-G-A-B
Stacking in 3rds produces: C-E-G-B. This is a C major 7th chord.
When continued through the other 6 remaining notes a run of chords appears.
These chords are: Major-Minor-Minor-Major-Dominant-Minor-Minor 7th/b5.
As you can see there are 2x Majors, 3x Minors, 1x Dominant and 1x Minor 7th/b5.
When these chords are put into ALL TWELVE KEYS 84 CHORDS/SCALES are realised.
A huge amount of popular music is constructed from these 84 chords and their variations.
This is why YOU SHOULD LEARN THEM and is the driving force for this book/cd set!!

CAN DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS PLAY TOGETHER WITH THE CD BACKING TRACKS?
Yes! The LSP system is in ALL TWELVE KEYS and in TREBLE and BASS clef as well as accommodating GUITAR and BASS TAB CHARTS (downloads from the LSP WEBSITE ONLY).
If instruments of DIFFERENT PITCHES want to play together using ANY OF THE CD BACKING TRACKS a second LSP WORKBOOK ONLY is available for this exact purpose. This WORKBOOK ONLY has NO CDs so it is very well priced and is a companion volume to the LSP MASTER WORKBOOK/CD SET.
If a guitarist and a tenor saxophonist wish to play together over say, C IONIAN GROOVE.
CD 1 or C MAJOR CD would be selected. The guitarist would read the WRITTEN MUSIC SHEET from CHAPTER 1-IONIAN GROOVE.
The trumpet player, being a TRANSPOSING INSTRUMENT pitched in Bb, would need to go to CHAPTER 11-KEY OF D MAJOR-IONIAN GROOVE in the WORKBOOK ONLY. Then both instruments will be in the SAME PITCH.
If a large ensemble of MIXED INSTRUMENTATION, school orchestras or college year groups for example, wish to play together using the LSP system with or without CD accompaniment, then more books would be required.
There will be price breaks for larger quantities of WORKBOOK ONLY.

IS IT EASY TO STORE AND DOWNLOAD MODULES, KEYS OR THE WHOLE LSP SYSTEM FROM THIS WEBSITE?
Yes! ALL of the material contained in BOTH LSP WORKBOOKS (including the 372 backing tracks) PLUS the INTERMEDIATE GROOVE TUNES and the GUITAR and BASS TAB CHARTS are available in MODULE FORMAT from the LSP WEBSITE.
The MODULES can be purchased in SINGLE MODULES/WHOLE KEYS/WHOLE SYSTEM.
The GUITAR and BASS TAB CHARTS are available in WHOLE KEYS/WHOLE SYSTEM.
The MODULES purchased can be DOWNLOADED onto your COMPUTER/LAPTOP and then used directly from the computer or loaded onto your iPad. The WRITTEN SHEETS can be read directly from the computer screen or produced as PRINTED SHEETS.

WHAT DOES A MODULE CONTAIN?
A MODULE is:
4 MP3 BACKING TRACKS (3 exercises and a Groove Track).
THREE WRITTEN SHEETS (3x exercises on 1 page, a GROOVE TUNE on 1 page and an INTERMEDIATE GROOVE TUNE on 1 page ).
CYCLE OF FIFTHS CHART

WHAT IS AVAILABLE AS GUITAR AND BASS TAB?
Everything contained within The Large Scale Project - The Seven Modes of the Major Scale - is available in both GUITAR and BASS TAB as well as the INTERMEDIATE GROOVE TUNES.
The TAB charts also have standard written notation which appears above the TAB stave.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH MODULES I HAVE PURCHASED?
When any MODULE is purchased from the shop it will leave an imprint informing you of your past purchases.
As the 84 MODULES are set out in a 'one view grid' it is very easy to get a visual readout of your purchases as well as your musical development as you buy more advanced keys like Db and B.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO APPROACH THE SEVEN MODES OF THE MAJOR SCALE?
Upon registering on the LSP website you will automatically be entitled to a FREE MODULE.
This FREE MODULE is for the WRITTEN KEY OF C MAJOR IONIAN. THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO BEGIN.
You will need to choose your instrument type from one of the 3 buttons (C Bb Eb) in order to receive the correct 4 backing tracks for this FREE MODULE. If you click on any of these 3 buttons a 'pop down menu' will appear and you can simply look for your 'instrument type' and confirm by choosing your instrument and clicking on it. This will ensure that you get the correct backing tracks. This is very important!
I would suggest working through the KEY OF C first in order to grasp the sound of EACH MODE. You may decide to buy the WHOLE KEY in one go or just work with the FREE DOWNLOAD first to see if you jibe well with the system.
The KEY OF C is technically the EASIEST KEY on almost all instruments. This is the key that most of us learn to play when we first approach learning our chosen instrument. The KEY OF C has no flats or sharps in it's key signature.
Once you feel comfortable with the KEY OF C you should then move to THE KEY OF F or the KEY OF G.
The KEY OF F will add one flat to the key signature and the KEY OF G will add one sharp to the key signature.
By adding one flat and one sharp at a time you will progress through the 12 keys in a logical fashion.
Once added all flats and sharps remain in the key signature and are only 'added to' in progressive keys.
Included within the LSP's material is a CYCLE OF FIFTHS CHART. This a circular chart showing all 12 KEYS  in a 'clockface' configuration with C at 12'o clock, F at 1 o’clock, G at 11 o’clock and so on.
You will find flat keys in a clockwise direction and sharp keys in an anti-clockwise direction. This divides your keys into logical 'bite size' pieces by adding a single flat or sharp to the key signature as you work from the 12 o’clock position (C) to the 6 o’clock position (Gb) in both a clockwise and anti-clockwise manner.
